How to Prepare for a New Puppy

Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting and joyous experience, but it also requires a lot of preparation and planning, so how should you prepare for a new puppy?

Our recommendations for how to prepare for a new puppy:

1. Puppy-proof your home

Before your puppy arrives, make sure to puppy-proof your home by removing any hazards or potential dangers. This includes securing loose wires, keeping cleaning products out of reach, and storing away any toxic plants.

2. Choose a suitable living space

Decide where your puppy will be spending most of their time and create a comfortable living space for them. This can be a crate, a designated room, or a cozy bed. Make sure to provide plenty of toys and a water bowl for your new pup. We highly recommend crate training. If you haven't purchased a crate yet, take a look at our size guide: What Size Dog Crate Should I Buy?

3. Stock up on supplies

Make sure you have all the necessary supplies before your puppy arrives. This includes food, water bowls, a leash, a collar, toys, and bedding. You may also want to consider getting puppy pads or a litter box for potty training. We've put together a Puppy Supply List with all of the items we recommend buying for your Cream Puff.

4. Find a vet

It's important to find a reputable veterinarian before your puppy arrives. Schedule a check-up as soon as possible to ensure your pup is healthy and up to date on all their vaccinations. For tips on finding a vet see our How to Choose the Right Veterinarian for Your Dog article.

5. Research training techniques

Start researching positive training techniques to ensure a smooth transition for your new puppy. Consider enrolling in a puppy training class to help with obedience and socialization. For helpful training advice we like BAXTER & Bella's Online Puppy School- you can use our exclusive discount code "CREAMPUFF" at checkout to get 25% off.

6. Prepare for potty training

Potty training can be a challenge, so make sure you're prepared with plenty of puppy pads or a designated potty area outside. Consistency and patience are key when it comes to potty training your new pup. Our FREE downloadable potty training guide can be found on our new family Welcome page.

7. Establish a routine

Dogs thrive on routine, so it's important to establish a consistent daily routine for your puppy. This can include feeding times, playtime, walks, and training sessions.

8. Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance can help protect your furry friend in case of unexpected accidents or illnesses. Consider researching different pet insurance options to find the best coverage for your pup. We recommend Trupanion to all of our families and have secured special discounts with them which can be found on our Exclusive Offers webpage.

Remember to always show patience, kindness, and love to your new puppy, and enjoy all the wonderful moments that come with being a pet owner, and part of our wonderful Cream PuffFamily.
